Curriculum Vitae​


Bruce Erickson is the Agronomy Education Distance & Outreach Director at Purdue University, working to help deliver Purdue Agronomy’s expertise to audiences in Indiana and around the world using a variety learning platforms.  Erickson’s areas of capability include corn and soybean production, precision farming, instructional design, and competency-based education and assessment. He developed the Agronomy e-Learning Academy, which has served more than 1,100 students from 22 countries and 39 states through its three courses:  Agronomy Essentials, Precision Agriculture, and Nutrient Management. He is the agricultural lead for the Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN) project, aiming to develop new applications and promote the adoption of digital agriculture and advanced manufacturing. Erickson’s research centers on precision farming education and adoption, where he leads the CropLife/Purdue Precision Dealer Survey, the most complete and longest-running measure of precision agriculture technology adoption.  He started his career as an agronomist with DuPont Pioneer in Iowa, served as Senior Technical Designer at Agri Business Group in Indianapolis, managed Purdue’s Site-Specific Management Center and Top Farmer Crop Workshop, then was the Agronomy Education Manager for the American Society of Agronomy (ASA). At ASA he taught several online courses, and was responsible for the International Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) Exam, the minimum qualifying exam for the 10,000+ member Certified Crop Adviser program.  Erickson received the 2018 Educator/Researcher Award of Excellence from the PrecisionAg Institute ​

Erickson grew up on an Iowa farm, completed his undergraduate work at Iowa State University in Agronomy, then began his professional career as an agronomist with DuPont Pioneer.  After completing his Master of Science degree at Iowa State University in Crop Production and Physiology and his PhD in Agronomy at Purdue, Erickson served as Senior Technical Designer at Agri Business Group in Indianapolis (now Adayana), an agricultural consulting company.  Returning to Purdue, Erickson was the Associate Director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture, where among other duties he coordinated the Top Farmer Crop Workshop and the Site Specific Management Center.  More recently he was the Agronomic Education Manager for the American Society of Agronomy, where he was the primary instructor for Fundamentals in Applied Agronomy, the 4R Approach to Soil and Water Management, Precision Agriculture for Practitioners, and a number of other educational programs.  Working with subject matter experts, he was also responsible for annually developing the International CCA Exam, the India CCA Exam, the Mexico CCA Exam, and the Tri-State (IL, IN, OH) CCA exam.
