Although our department of 550 students seems small, the opportunities are endless on a campus with over a thousand clubs and organizations, Big Ten athletics, and 39,000 possible friends!

Derek Berkshire Agribusiness

Family and agriculture are intertwined in Derek’s life. He milked cows at his grandparents’ dairy farm and showed livestock in 4-H. Despite a family lineage filled with Purdue Agriculture alumni, Derek was headed in another direction. Or so he thought. “In high school, I wanted to be surgeon,” Derek says. But as his FFA involvement grew, so did his interest in his agricultural roots. “Doing something ag-related was expected in my family,” he admits, “But it turns out it was what I wanted, too. My passion for ag was larger than I let on.” He considered other schools, but in the end, applied only to Purdue. “It’s family tradition. I feel the stars aligned to bring me here. Purdue Ag is a great place to be.”

"I came to Purdue because the minute that I stepped on campus, during a visit, I felt like I was at home. There was a feeling of greatness and opportunity that got me excited to call the place home. Erica has traveled across the globe during her time at Purdue and learned a lot along the way. She leaves a small piece of advice for underclassman: "College is about so much more than just your resume. Use this time to find what you love and invest your energy there. After four years, you want to look back on your time knowing you spent your time fostering your passions, growing yourself as a person, and learning what you love. It does not matter if it is not the typical path; it's the path that reflects who you are & the internships, jobs, or fellowships will see that."

Kathleen Jacobs Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Communication

Jacobs served as Ag Council Vice President, was tapped for Mortar Board, was a part of the Old Masters Central Committee and completed an internship each semester. Her favorite thing about the agricultural economics department is the professors. Said Jacobs, "I have never had a professor within AGEC that has not been willing to help me work through questions I have in regards to their class. This willingness has allowed me to learn more and truly capitalize on my Purdue experience."
